Azerbaijan should pass a bill “On standardization of geographical names” and send it to UN on standardization of geographical names of countries of the East Europe, the North and Central Asia. Garib Mammadov, the representative of the State Committee on Land and Cartography, informed journalists, Trend reports.

He noted that Armenians change the Azerbaijani historical names

benefiting the absence of such law. The State Committee has prepared the standards of geographical names. “Simply it is necessary to adopt a law on this issue. Although we have submitted the bill to the parliament for 5 years, there has been no result yet,” said Mammadov

Besides, Mammadov stressed that the branch of UN on standardization of geographical names of countries of the East Europe, the North and Central Asia was established by Russia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine. 19 states are represented in the branch.

Place Names

The other direction in Armenian vandalism policy was to change place names which show these lands' belongingness to Turks. All place names were substituted for Armenian names in Armenia. E.g. Urud-Oront, Jafarabad-Argavang, Zeyve-Metsamor etc. they changed the place names to wipe out the trace of Azerbaijanis in these lands. There was Mir Davud tomb, who was the grandson of 8 th imam Rza, in Pir Davud village, Zengezur and Seyid Ehmed tomb, who was the son of 7 th imam Museyi-Kazim, in Gara Vali village. The both monuments were destroyed by Armenians .

changing of place names started in 1960s and 1970s

At the beginning of the century, the exile of the Azerbaijanis living in Armenia was realised in various ways. In 1927, Azerbaijanis formed the 70 % of the population living in Erivan. In those years, 130.000 Azerbaijanis were expelled and close to 100.000 Armenians were brought in their places from Middle Eastern countries. This process also continued in later years. According to the Armenian historians, out of the 2.000 of the 2.300 villages in Armenia, were Azerbaijani villages.

After 1936, the Armenian authorities started to change and cancel the Azerbaijani place names and also in 1991, Armenian names were given to 90 Azerbaijani villages, in accordance with the order of Levon Ter - Petrosyan, the President of Armenia. The changing of place names started in 1960s and 1970s under the presidency of Hovannes Bagdarasyan, the Deputy President of Armenian Supreme Soviet.
